History

RICHARDSON, TEXAS – #23 UT Tyler Softball picked up their eighth road doubleheader sweep of the season and moved to 38-10 overall and 30-6 in LSC play after taking down UT Dallas on Friday.

GAME ONE: #23 UT Tyler 12 | UT Dallas 8

The Patriots responded to an early rally from the Comets and distanced themselves late for the win.

UT Dallas would strike first with three runs in the home half of the first inning, and one each in the second and the third, but the Patriots offense held steady with even more support in the second, third, and fourth.

In the top of the second, the Patriots got on the board with a Keona Wells double down the left field line to plate a pair. Dezirae Lopez would single her home as the next batter, and she would later score on a Laci Berecochea single to help the Patriots take the lead.

In the third, Lopez drove home two more with a two RBI single up the middle, breaking the tie and making it 6-4. One inning later, Sydney Linn got all of the first pitch she saw, driving it over the center field wall for a two run homer to make it 8-5 and put the Patriots out of reach.

Down the stretch, the Patriots added two RBI in the sixth as Kaylee Cavazos struck on a two RBI single to right center, and both Taryn Barney and Kaelyn Lerma singled up the middle in the seventh to score two more.

Lopez, Berecochea, Linn, and Lerma each recorded at least two hits in game one, with Lerma going 3-for-5 with three runs. Four players recorded at least two RBI, with Lopez leading with three.

Addison Martindale earned the win after going 2.1 innings in relief with two runs allowed on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO: #23 UT Tyler 13 | UT Dallas 1

UT Tyler kept the bats cooking in game two, scoring 10 runs over the first two innings to coast to the sweep.

Taryn Barney got things going in game two as she drove home Layne Reh with an RBI single to left to give the Patriots the lead. Two batters later, she would come around to score on a wild pitch to double the lead.

In the second inning, the Patriots broke the game open and put it out of reach early. Keona Wells dropped a perfect bunt single with two on, but an error from the Comets on the throw went long and the Patriots plated all three runs.

Sydney Linn would step up later in the inning with two on and two out, and she reached on a fielding error and then a throwing error that allowed two to score. Kaelyn Lerma would drop in an RBI single as the next batter, and the Patriots led 8-0. Kaylee Cavazos put the exclamation point on the inning with a two RBI double to left center, making it 10-0.

The Patriots offense struck again in the fourth, this time putting their final runs on the board. They would load the bases with two outs, and a fielding error again allowed a runner to score. That brought up Trinity Hale, who plated another run with an RBI single, and another run came around to score via an error to make it 13-0.

While the Patriots offense put together another big game, Alli Kimball worked efficiently in the circle. She would throw the first three innings to get the win, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two. She worked a 1-2-3 second and faced just four batters in the third.

Kaylee Harris threw the final two frames, allowing two hits and one run while posting a walk and a strikeout to end the game and keep the Patriots within run-rule territory.

10 different players recorded a hit in game two, including four with at least two hits. Barney, Lerma, Megan Lau, and Wells all had the two hit efforts. Nine players recorded a run, including four with two.

UT Tyler will now look ahead to their final weekend of the regular season next week as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville on May 1 at 3 p.m., and then Texas A&M International on May 3 at 1 p.m. Sunday’s doubleheader with the Dustdevils will also double as senior day for the program.
