Was the collapse of the Roman Republic inevitable? If Julius Caesar never crossed the Rubicon, would someone else have metaphorically done so?
I say yes, as Sulla had basically done so even before Caesar. The Republic was under too much strain managing their broad empire (which was technically already an empire before their republican system gave way). Thoughts?
