Peter Dinklage has joined the cast of Alien: Earth, which creates a strange meta-note for the franchise. So far, no details have been revealed about Dinklage’s character in the upcoming FX series and prequel to the Alien franchise. Dinklage is an accomplished actor best known for his multi-Emmy-winning role as Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones, adding some star power to the FX series.

One of Peter Dinklage’s most overlooked roles is as the voice of Captain Gutt in Ice Age: Continental Drift, which makes Dinklage’s casting in Alien: Earth all the more fascinating, as the series established an unexpected in-universe link between the Ice Age films and the Alien franchise. Now that Dinklage is joining the cast of Alien: Earth, the Ice Age reference becomes even more meta.

The ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Alien: Earth’ Connection & How Peter Dinklage Connects to It

One of the strangest moments in Alien: Earth was the inclusion of clips from the film Ice Age: Continental Drift. The movie is established as one Wendy (Sydney Chandler) used to watch as a kid, with Sid the Sloth’s line, “taste my fury,” becoming a phrase that connects Wendy to her brother, Joe (Alex Lawther). Episode 2 of Alien: Earth even features a frame of Wendy with a soft cross frame next to Sid the Sloth from Ice Age: Continental Drift, which quickly circulated online for how bizarre it felt given Alien: Earth’s serious tone. Anyone who might have seen the image outside the series would think it’s fake, but it is an actual still frame.

This immediately raised questions of why Alien: Earth would feature a reference to Ice Age (specifically, the fourth film in the franchise, instead of the far more iconic first film). Despite Ice Age: Continental Drift grossing $877 million worldwide, it seems largely forgotten. Most people might not even know that Peter Dinklage was even in it, or that he voices a Gigantopithecus pirate captain who serves as the main villain.

The Significance of ‘Alien: Earth’s Reference to ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’

When the episode first aired, Movie Web did its own deep-dive analysis into why Alien: Earth would feature an overt reference to Ice Age: Continental Drift. Was it the fact that both Alien and Ice Age are franchises that were once owned by 20th Century Fox that are now under the Walt Disney banner? Was it a reference to the fact that Ice Age: Continental Drift opened the same year as Prometheus? Was it even deeper in that with a lyric from the Ice Age: Continental Drift song “Master of the Seas” features the lyric “in a world that’s going under” being a reference to the fact that both Alien and Ice Age are franchises where characters are living in a world that is doomed to suffer?

No. It turns out the answer was actually much simpler. Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley revealed that the Ice Age: Continental Drift reference was included because it was a popular kids’ movie. Don’t expect Alien: Earth’s Wendy to comment on how Peter Dinklage’s character sounds like a character from Ice Age: Continental Drift in a meta-joke like Julia Roberts in Ocean’s Twelve style. However, it is another wrinkle in the strange, unexpected connection between the Alien and Ice Age franchises.
