The Lincoln Blue Tigers softball team tied the program’s single season win record after sweeping the Cottey College Comets on Tuesday at LU Softball Field.
After picking up both wins the Blue Tigers moved to 17-14 on the season. The previous win record of 17 came in the 1999-2000 and the 2000-01 seasons. In 1999-2000 the Blue Tigers went 17-31, in 2000-01 they went 17-32.
Lincoln won the opening contest of Tuesday’s doubleheader ,using a big third inning to take a 4-1 win.
The Comets scored the first run of the contest on an Alma Garcia sacrifice fly that scored Makalya Snyder in the first inning.
The Blue Tigers grabbed the lead for good, scoring three runs in the third. Ella Percival scored the first run after Hannah Heisler doubled and the Comets committed a throwing error.
Ann-Marie Simpson then laid down a bunt that drove in Heisler from third. Gracie Wright plated the final run with a sacrifice bunt.
Simpson drove in Heisler for the game’s final run with a triple in the fifth inning.
Mallorey Rogers got the start for Lincoln and threw six innings allowing one unearned run on four hits. Maddie Sechrest picked up her fifth save on the year, throwing the final frame without allowing a hit.
Lincoln used a strong pitching performance from Abby Pulliam to win Tuesday’s final game 3-0.
Pulliam threw a complete game allowing just two hits and faced 25 hitters in the contest. She added four strikeouts to her line.
Heisler drove in the opening Blue Tiger run of the contest with a double down the left-field line in the third. Abi Jorgensen scored on the play. Kierra O’Rourke plated Gracie Wright in the fourth with a single to center. Wright then drove in the final run of the contest with a single to center that scored Jorgensen in the fifth.
Tatianna Colegrove got the start for the Comets (23-8) and threw six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.
Lincoln is back on the diamond in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday against Illinois Springfield.
First pitch is scheduled for noon in Springfield (Ill.)
