Siemens joined a European Space Agency (ESA) programme to provide a leg-up to nascent products and services providers by offering access to relevant software, digital twin capabilities and other expertise.

Start-ups promoted by ESA Business Incubation Centres are to gain access to Siemens’ Xcelerator software and other digital products including an engineering and simulation backbone as part of its involvement in the Partnership Initiative for Commercialisation (EPIC) programme.

Cedrik Neike, Siemens board member and CEO of its Digital Industries unit, said the company is contributing towards a broader push to establish Europe as a frontrunner in the global space sector.

He said the region “does not lack ideas” for space products and services, but requires some help to get off the ground.

“It needs runways to take off at scale.”

The software Siemens is providing access to is expected to boost new companies’ engineering capabilities by providing access to virtual design and simulation tools.

Siemens highlighted a potential to participate in joint activities which could raise the profile of emerging businesses.

It explained there are 37 ESA incubation facilities in the region, which have helped more than 2,000 companies so far.
