Comets soar to 3-0 start

NASELLE — The Naselle baseball team has streaked to a 3-0 start this season, including notching their first league win of the season over Ocosta and Oakville by a combined 30-4 margin last week.
Chadwick, Quashnick, Troffer lead Comet comeback over Ocosta
In their second non-league game of the season on Monday, March 23, Naselle pitchers Leith Chadwick (16) and Kinston Quashnick (3) combined for 10 strikeouts while limiting Ocosta to just two hits over seven innings in a 6-2 win. Naselle was led offensively by cleanup hitter Brodie Troffer (26), who finished with a game-high three hits, with one RBI among 11 total hits as a team. Naselle only suffered one strikeout in a balanced lineup, with eight of their nine batters scattering hits.
In their first league game of the season — an away game at Oakville on Friday, March 27 — Naselle pounded the home team for 11 first-inning runs, then added 10 more in the fifth inning to finish the 24-2 mercy-rule blowout. The Comets only needed 11 hits — with Eli Gardner (9), Trajen Ford (6), Kayden Wirkkala (15) each tallying two — and combining for eight RBIs. The Comets were patient at the plate, amassing an astounding 13 walks, while only issuing three.
Naselle, who competes in the 1B Coastal League, thrashed 2B opponent Raymond/South Bend 12-0 in a non-league game on March 16. The Comets have outscored 2B opponents 18-2 this season.
Up next: Naselle (3-0) will next travel to take on Astoria on March 30 (after the Observer’s press deadline), followed by a home game against Wahkiakum on March 31 and a home game against Oakville on April 3.
