An Ohio man says a dream led him straight to a baseball-sized meteorite fragment as the ongoing hunt continues to draw crowds and boost local businesses.
MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio — The search for meteorite fragments in Ohio has drawn crowds from across the region, with enthusiasts, families and serious collectors combing fields and roadsides in hopes of finding a rare piece of the space rock that exploded overhead earlier this month.
Among them is Jeff Makkos, a construction worker who was nearby when the meteor exploded.
“I heard it and felt it,” Makkos recalled.
He spent several days searching, from Wednesday through Sunday, finding only a small fragment.
Then, he says, everything changed.
“I had a dream Monday night that I would find another piece, and it told me right where to go.”
Makkos had already received permission from the property owner days earlier to continue searching the land.
“I went back on Tuesday and found it immediately,” he said. “I knew where to go from the dream. I literally walked 150 yards from my truck, looked down, and there was the crater.”
What he found was one of the largest meteorite fragments recovered so far: a baseball-sized rock weighing 308 grams.
The discovery comes as the meteorite hunt continues to draw visitors, boosting nearby businesses as people stop for food, supplies and directions before heading out to search.
The growing crowds have also prompted reminders from officials to respect private property after several trespassing complaints were reported.
As for the newly discovered meteorite, Makkos already knows where he hopes it ends up.
“I would love to see it go to a museum,” he said.
