Japan's Kaguya spacecraft orbited the Moon from 2007 to 2009. It created a detailed topographical map of the surface and captured stunning views from a high-definition camera.

Image processor Seán Doran used those views to create this 4K video of Earth rising and setting on the lunar horizon.

  1. This makes you feel like if there are ET’s that fly within view of our solar system, they are going to view that beautiful blue marble and assume it looks like a peaceful, welcoming place, let’s go check it out. I know I would if I was an NHI.

It’s amazing when you scrub the video inside Reddit’s app, the smoothness gives an epic sense of planetary motion

  3. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Does a higher res version of this exist?

  4. Not technically an “Earth rise” since it’s just “a planet coming into view because of the spacecraft’s movement” vs. “,a body coming into view for an observer who is stationary with respect to the closer body, due to rotation of the closer body.”

For example, sunrise happens when a stationary human observes the sun “rise” (come into view) due to the rotation of the closer body (Earth)

Reads like a Randy neuman song:

    There’s a blue earth a-risin
    For the Kayuga spacecraft

It’s crazy to know that one man is literally wreaking havoc against all of humanity on that beautiful blue rock.

The craziest part is that there are so many stars in the sky that they cover almost every square inch, but in every space photo there is never even a hint of a star…I know I know…camera, exposure…blah blah blah… why has noone ever put a camera up there that can see all the stars along with the moon or earth. Doesn’t make much sense to me

  8. this is actually insane to think about 😭 like that tiny blue edge is literally everything we know… every person, every moment, all of it just sitting there on the horizon 💀 stuff like this always makes my problems feel so small for a second ngl

  9. The contrast between the barren rock of the Moon and our incredible garden planet (as a friend of mine once described Earth) is very striking. Great sequence!

I’m curious to know, if an alien life form was cruising up on this view of the earth, could the blue and white colors be mistaken for other elements? If so, what elements might reflect in a similar way?

  11. I got emotional seeing this. You know, if only I could see what is in the beyond and see space.

  12. Crazy perspective, it doesn’t even look like it could be real, so crisp. Nice!
