Welcome to this edition of The Intelligence Brief… This week, authorities in Albuquerque continue searching for clues in the mysterious disappearance of retired U.S. Air Force Major General William Neil McCasland, a former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory whose career placed him at the center of some of the military’s most advanced scientific and space programs. In our analysis, we’ll be looking at 1) the timeline of McCasland’s disappearance and the ongoing investigation by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2) McCasland’s decades-long career overseeing highly classified defense and space technology initiatives, 3) the renewed public attention surrounding his past association with UFO-related discussions involving Tom DeLonge and leaked emails from John Podesta, and 4) what investigators and McCasland’s family say about the case as the search continues with few confirmed leads.

Quote of the Week

“Neil [McCasland] does not have any special knowledge about the ET bodies and debris from the Roswell crash stored at Wright-Patt. Though at this point with absolutely no sign of him, maybe the best hypothesis is that aliens beamed him up to the mothership.”

Search Intensifies for Former Pentagon Special Programs Official Who Vanished in New Mexico

Authorities in New Mexico are continuing to search for clues in the disappearance of William Neil McCasland, a retired U.S. Air Force official who vanished without a trace in late February.

McCasland, age 68, was initially reported missing by officials with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, February 27, 2026.

“The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is looking for assistance from the public in looking for 68-year-old William Neil McCasland,” the Silver Alert released by law enforcement stated, listing McCasland’s last known whereabouts as having in the vicinity of Quail Run Ct NE at approximately 11:00 a.m. on February 27.

“Unknown clothing description and unknown direction of travel,” the Silver Alert issued by the Bernalillo Sheriff’s Office read, adding that “Due to his medical issues law enforcement is concerned for his safety.”

Since his disappearance last month, as authorities have continued to search for any leads that may be able to offer an idea as to McCasland’s whereabouts, speculations about the missing USAF official’s wellness at the time he went missing, as well as the nature of his work with the U.S. government, and even his past associations with the ever-controversial topic of UFOs, have all prompted widespread speculation.

So what is the real story behind Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, and what have authorities, relatives, and those close to him had to say since he mysteriously went missing?

A Missing Official’s Storied Air Force Career

According to biographical information available about McCasland that can be found online, the retired USAF Major General is best known for his time as former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, where his career placed him at the center of some of the U.S. military’s most sensitive science and technology programs.

After graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he served in the Secretary of the Air Force’s Office of Special Projects at Los Angeles Air Force Base, where he worked on highly classified payload and satellite programs, before later returning to MIT for his doctorate in advance of continuing his work in advanced space programs.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, McCasland’s work brought him to Buckley Air Force Base, where he directed mission planning for the Aerospace Data Facility and later commanded its operations squadron. Thereafter, he served as the chief engineer of the Navstar GPS Joint Program Office at Los Angeles AFB, after which he led the Space Based Laser program office and directed the Space Vehicles Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, in collaboration with organizations that included the National Reconnaissance Office.

Later in his career, McCasland’s work included senior oversight roles within the Pentagon, which, among other things, included his role as executive secretary of the Special Access Program Oversight Committee, which supervises the nation’s most highly classified programs. His final assignment, in 2011, saw McCasland assume leadership over the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where the Major General oversaw billions of dollars in advanced scientific research undertaken by the USAF until his retirement in 2013.

UFO Speculation

While McCasland’s career highlights alone make him a fascinating individual in terms of his role in the modern history of military, scientific, and technological advancement, it was his brief association with individuals involved with the effort to push for the declassification of UFO secrets that brought him widespread attention.

Following the 2016 leak of emails from John Podesta, then chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, by Wikileaks following a data breach attributed to the Russian-linked hacking group Fancy Bear, it was revealed that rock musician Tom DeLonge had communicated with Podesta about having McCasland join him for a visit to his office to discuss UFOs.

“I’ve been working with him for four months,” DeLonge wrote in the email to Podesta (which can be found here), referencing a “four hour presentation” DeLonge had given McCasland around that time.

“Trust me, the advice is already been happening on how to do all this,” DeLonge wrote at the time. “He just has to say that out loud, but he is very, very aware- as he was in charge of all of the stuff.”

DeLonge also claimed to Podesta that “When Roswell crashed, they shipped it to the laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. General McCasland was in charge of that exact laboratory up to a couple years ago.”

“He not only knows what I’m trying to achieve, he helped assemble my advisory team,” DeLonge told Podesta. “He’s a very important man.”

The leak of the email communications between Podesta and DeLonge fueled speculation among observers that McCasland—and possibly other high-ranking officials in DeLonge’s “advisory team”— had overseen highly classified programs in government and might have been guiding or advising DeLonge’s activities. While some saw this as an effort toward so-called “UFO disclosure,” others speculated at the time that McCasland’s involvement with Delonge might represent an effort to frame advanced U.S. defense technologies within a UFO narrative; however, no evidence to date has ever substantiated that claim.

McCasland’s Wife Speaks

As can be expected, with the news that McCasland was missing, a new wave of internet speculations emerged, with many attempting to link the retired official’s odd disappearance to his past advocacy for UFO transparency.

Responding to some of the recent claims in a posting that appeared on social media last week, Neil McCasland’s wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, wrote that currently there has still been “no indication whatsoever of where he might be” after remaining missing for one week. Along with a brief update on the current state of the search for her missing husband, whom she thanked “for their unflagging dedicated efforts and support,” Wilkerson also addressed several of the speculations about her husband’s disappearance appearing online.

FBI

“I would like to take this opportunity to dispel some of the misinformation circulating about Neil and his disappearance, mostly from uninformed media sources,” Wilkerson wrote.

According to Wilkerson’s post:

The initial Silver Alert from BCSO mentioned medical conditions, which some have taken to mean Alzheimer’s. Neil is at some risk, but not from dementia. He was not confused and disoriented.
There was no concerning Friday-morning telephone call to a close relative. I have been in contact with all of his close relatives and some not-so-close ones. This is a complete fabrication.
It is true that when Neil was in the Air Force, he had access to home highly classified programs and information. He retired from the AF almost 13 years ago and has had only very commonly held clearances since. It seems quite unlikely that he was taken to extract very dated secrets from him.
It is true that Neil had a brief association with the UFO community through Tom DeLonge, former frontman for Blink-182 and founder of the organization To The Stars. Neil worked with Tom for a bit shortly after his Air Force retirement as an unpaid (Neil’s choice) consultant on military and technical/scientific matters to lend verisimilitude to Tom’s fiction book and media activities. After the Russians hacked John Podesta’s emails (see Neil’s Wikipedia page), there was less contact with Tom and the community pushing for release of UFO information. This connection is not a reason for someone to abduct Neil.

“Neil does not have any special knowledge about the ET bodies and debris from the Roswell crash stored at Wright-Patt,” Wilkerson wrote in her post, adding somewhat cryptically that “at this point with absolutely no sign of him, maybe the best hypothesis is that aliens beamed him up to the mothership.”

“However, no sightings of a mothership hovering above the Sandia Mountains have been reported,” Wilkerson concluded.

Where Things Currently Stand

As the search continues, authorities in Albuquerque, working with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, say investigators have contacted more than 600 homeowners in the area, requesting home security footage from Ring cameras and other surveillance systems in an effort to try to trace McCasland’s movements at the time of his disappearance.

Presently, despite dozens of tips and assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, authorities say the search has produced no confirmed sightings of the missing man. Officials noted that McCasland reportedly left his phone behind and appears to have vanished on foot, leaving investigators with few leads as the case entered its second week.

Law enforcement has asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office Missing Persons Unit or submit tips through official reporting channels. Anyone with information may text BCSO to 847411, or you may call the sheriff’s Missing Persons Unit directly at 505-468-7070. Additionally, information can be uploaded directly online using the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office NM Evidence Submission Portal.
