Hi everyone,

I might have witnessed a potential fireball this evening and I’m curious if anyone else saw it.

Location: Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany)

Time: around 19:00 local time

I saw a bright red/orange burning object with sparks moving across the sky. It was visible for roughly 7–10 seconds and appeared in the direction of about 227° (south-west) from my position. After it disappeared, I heard a loud, dull boom a short time later.

Did anyone else in RLP, NRW, Hesse, or nearby regions see something similar around that time? I’m trying to figure out whether it might have been a meteor / fireball or something else.

Any info or additional sightings would be really interesting!

Edit:

Solved. Here is a News article about it :

I’ve seen a post in our local Facebook group, I live like 45 mins by car from Wiesbaden. They think it was a meteorite.

A buddy of mine an me have seen it, too. Around 1900 in Trier in RLP. Bright and a very loud boom

  4. Saw it at 18:55 near Münster, NRW. Really bright and seemed to explode but made no sound. Direction was 195° moving from west to east at a low angle.

  5. I’ve noticed it driving home in Rhineland-Palatinate. I didn’t see it directly but i saw the environment light up for like 2 flashes and wondered what it was.

  6. And why are trickster deities always he/him? I mean, these are all constructs that reflect our perceptions.

I have had a load of cars and always named them. Edna that Escort, Kerri the Kia, Ruby the Rio, but the last car I got I named Geb. Just Geb. Felt right.

At the end of the day that’s why we do stuff like this. Because of the feeling.

  7. Yes, I saw it from Duisburg, looking south-east at 18:56 – 18:57, while it was travelling roughly north. It was quite bright, but already falling apart.

  8. We saw it and my girlfriend took a picture of leftovers? glowing at the sky after the Event. Still dont know what it was. The direction you describe seems to be the same

Also seen all over Netherlands tonight- we saw it just outside Amsterdam streaking through the sky. No boom though

Exactly 18h55, East of France, Fragments were breaking off from the tail of the object

  11. I saw something like you described in Bingen, directly west. Saw a small bright light moving fast and disintegating into sparks for a few seconds. Sometime around 18:55-18:58.

I have seen it from the mid east of France (close to Lons-le-Saunier) looking North. It was flying from west to east.

  13. I saw a german website say it was potentially a falcon 9 second stage burning up. There was a falcon 9 launch earlier today which had a planned trajectory going from the US going south over antartica, africa and Europe. So that is a plausible explanation

I saw it in Bonn and can confirm your observation
*really bright, red/orange, some really bright sparks in the end
    *duration about 7-10sec
    *didn’t hear anything

Yes it was seen by people all over Saarland, Luxemburg and RLP, NRW and even the Netherlands apparently

  16. came here to report the same thing, saw it from NRW/Essen from my balcony around the same time!! It appeared as this super bright glowing thing and then flew across the sky for a few seconds, with a green/orange streak and broke apart a little. prettyyy sure it was a fireball since it was so bright.

The Frankfurt sub, r/Frankfurt, is full of posts about it. So…yeah, Hesse checking in 🙂

From Belgium towards Germany, multiple debris and hot white explosions were observed. It felt so close it was strange we couldn’t hear it.

I saw it too in trier and heard a boom after a couple minutes. I got scared shitless, but now I feel so lucky I saw it!

I saw it too! I was in the Netherlands (near Schiphol). I was standing in the garden, it was somewhere from 18:55 to 19:00, I was looking south east. I first caught it, low above a row of houses on the horizon. It was moving left from my point of view, down at like a 15 degree angle. It was very bright, the sun had set 30 min ago but the sky was still blue, and it was extremely easy to see. I only saw it for 2-3 seconds before it dipped below a group of houses in front of me, so I couldn’t take a picture in time, but I’ve reported it to the IMO as well.

I saw ist, too, form the Lower Rhine Region, close to the Dutch border. There are now police reports coming in of damage to houses in Rhineland-Palatinate in the Regions Eifel and Hunsrück and the city Koblenz.
