CLAYTON — Host Clayton erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday, March 5, to take a 5-4 varsity baseball win over Southern Nash.

The 5-A Firebirds of the 5-A/6-A Big East Conference led 2-0 on a sacrifice bunt by Caiden Peeler and an RBI single by Grayden Murray in the top of the fourth. Maddox Deans also drove in a run for Southern Nash (2-1) while Isaiah Battle went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Eli Suydam doubled.

Battle took the mound loss after surrendering five earned runs on one hit and eight walks over 4 1/3 innings.

It was the first win after two losses for the 7-A Greater Neuse River Conference Comets.

The Firebirds will host Southern Wayne to start Big East play Tuesday.
