Professor James Osborn has published a new article exploring how the rapid transformation of the global space sector is reshaping economies, governance and security.
Titled The Final Frontier: The Rise and Risks of the Modern Space Sector, the piece appears in The Perth Dialogue, published by the Forrest Research Foundation. The Dialogue brings together international leaders from science, industry and policy in an accessible format designed to stimulate discussion beyond specialist circles.
In the article, Professor Osborn analyses the accelerating commercialisation of space and the strategic, regulatory and security challenges emerging alongside it. Technological capability is advancing quickly. Governance and international coordination, he argues, must keep pace if space is to remain stable and sustainable. Drawing on the interdisciplinary expertise of Durham University Space Research Centre (SPARC), the article sets out a case for responsible innovation – aligning advances in satellite systems, commercial capability and sustainability with clear standards, effective oversight and international cooperation.
International collaboration
The publication coincided with a visit to Durham by James Arvanitakis, Director of the Forrest Research Foundation. During the visit, the Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding with the Durham University Institute of Advanced Study, strengthening collaboration in interdisciplinary research.
