LUBBOCK, Texas (March 1, 2026) — Lubbock Christian University erased a seven-run deficit but let a late lead slip away, dropping the series finale against UT Dallas 18-13 at Hays Field on Sunday.Â
It was a roller coaster game for both the Chaps and the Comets, with a big early lead for the visitors erased in the middle innings before UTD came back themselves to win the game in the eighth.Â
Lubbock Christian now holds an 8-10 record overall and also stands at 8-10 in the Lone Star Conference. UTD improves to 11-7 overall and matches that with an 11-7 record in the league.
UTD scored five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Nico Fernandez and a two-run shot by Alex Miller, chasing Chap starter Caden Cline from the game. They added two more runs in the top of the fourth to lead 7-0.Â
In the fourth inning, Owen Alsup put the Chaps on the board with a two-run home run, bringing the score to 7-2 in favor of the Comets.
The Comets got a run back in the fifth, before the Chaparrals closed the gap even further in the fifth inning. Dylan Marx tripled and scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two-run double from Roe Forrest. Alsup added an RBI groundout, making it 8-6 through five innings.
The sixth inning saw the Chaps take the lead with a five-run outburst. Back-to-back one-out singles from Marx and Kyle Lewis started the rally in a frame that saw the Chaps send 11 batters to the plate. The pair worked a double steal to score a run, which they did again later in the inning. The go-ahead RBI came from Roe Forrest, and Alsup drove in an insurance run before UTD finally got out of the inning.Â
Lubbock Christian added two more runs in the seventh inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jorge De Los Santos and an RBI single by Freddie Nolen, extending their lead to 13-9.
The Comets responded in the eighth inning with an eight-run rally, highlighted by a three-run triple from Austin Wallace. UTD added one more run in the ninth with a solo home run from Chris Benavidez, sealing an 18-13 victory over Lubbock Christian.
