In 1998 Homer Simpson was able to figure out the calculation for the mass of the Higgs Boson particle, aka the God particle, 14 years before CERN did, and that equation was worth $13.5 billion.

That is the particle accelerator that they built in CERN for context👁️

  1. I mean, the writers were science and math nerds. This equation was more than likely floating around in theoretical physics for decades.

British science writer and author of [*The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets*](https://www.amazon.com/The-Simpsons-Their-Mathematical-Secrets/dp/1620402777)*,* Simon Singh, says in the scheme of things, that figure isn’t actually that far off the 125 GeV estimate that was the result of the CERN Higgs boson discovery in 2012.

“If you work it out, you get the mass of a Higgs boson that’s only a bit larger than the nano-mass of [what] a Higgs boson actually is,” [Singh told Nick Clark at ](http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/how-homer-simpson-discovered-the-higgs-boson-over-a-decade-before-scientists-10079006.html)[*The Independent*](http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/how-homer-simpson-discovered-the-higgs-boson-over-a-decade-before-scientists-10079006.html)*.* “It’s kind of amazing as Homer makes this prediction 14 years before it was discovered.”

Turns out a lot of the writers on *The Simpsons* are mathematicians, [Singh telling *The Independent*](http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/how-homer-simpson-discovered-the-higgs-boson-over-a-decade-before-scientists-10079006.html) that it’s “the most mathematical TV show on prime-time television in history.” The mathematician who happened to write that formula for Homer is David X. Cohen, who went on to be the head writer and executive producer of *Futurama*. [According to Richard Gray at *The Daily Mail*](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2975606/Did-Homer-Simpson-discover-HIGGS-BOSON-Maths-1998-episode-predicts-particle-s-mass-14-years-CERN.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490), Cohen contacted one of his high school friends, David Schiminovich, who is an astronomer at Columbia University, and worked with him on the equation.

“The equation is a playful combination of various fundamental parameters, namely the Planck constant, the gravitational constant, and the speed of light,” [Singh told him](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2975606/Did-Homer-Simpson-discover-HIGGS-BOSON-Maths-1998-episode-predicts-particle-s-mass-14-years-CERN.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490).

  3. The Higgs particle was predicted theoretically for quite some time, well before this Simpsons episode. What CERN accomplished was to confirm that the particle exists in the actual physical universe and not just in mathematical theory.
