I mean, the writers were science and math nerds. This equation was more than likely floating around in theoretical physics for decades.

The Higgs particle was predicted theoretically for quite some time, well before this Simpsons episode. What CERN accomplished was to confirm that the particle exists in the actual physical universe and not just in mathematical theory.
