A mother-of-three has described her shock at finding that her eyes had turned fluorescent green following an accident during a routine appointment at a hospital in Galway.

Magarita Wargola said there was panic after the mishap, and she ended up leaving the hospital and driving home with glowing, yellow-green eyes like something from a horror movie.

The artist and photographer, who was born in Poland, took to social media to share her story in the immediate aftermath of the calamity.

“This is not a filter,” she said in a video post, showing off her luminous green eyes.

Ms Wargola explained that a nurse had forgotten to ask if she was wearing contact lenses before putting drops in her eyes, which stained her lenses with fluorescent dye.

“She did not tell me what she was going to do. She literally squirted the drops into my eyes without telling me what she was doing and why,” she recounted. “I blinked and everything went yellow.

“We both panicked,” continued Ms Wargola. “She tried to wash it out with the saline [solution], taking [the lenses] out, more washing, apologising, washing several times. Unfortunately, it stained.”

To make matters worse, the Galway resident hadn’t brought a spare pair of contacts, so she had to put the fluorescent green lenses back for the drive home – likely getting some funny looks on her commute.

She later updated her followers with another post on social media, at which stage she had removed the remarkable-looking eyewear, to reassure everyone that she was fine after her ordeal.

“Back to normal. Don’t worry, nothing [bad] happened to me,” she reported, adding that she wasn’t mad at the nurse, and the whole escapade had been “fun” in the end.

Ms Wargola noted that the contact lenses were still stained, sporting an almost-radioactive green glow, and joked that she might even use them for St. Patrick’s Day.
