
During the Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43), Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev became the center of one of WWII’s most persistent battlefield legends.
According to Soviet accounts, German High Command sent an elite sniper instructor from Berlin — often named “Major König” or “Major Konrad” — specifically to hunt him. After a tense, multi-day duel, Zaytsev reportedly killed the German marksman and recovered identification papers from the body.
