Maine’s Jessica Meir leads NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 to ISS

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (WABI/AP) – Caribou native and astronaut Jessica Meir is on her way back to the International Space Station.

Meir who is serving as spacecraft commander blasted off from the Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Friday morning.

Also aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft are NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.

This is Meir’s second trip to the International Space Station. She previously participated in the first all-woman spacewalk in 2019. Unlike her last trip, Meir will now have a bigger family cheering from earth. She now has a husband and a 3-year-old daughter.

This is her first trip to the stars serving as mission commander.

“It turns out Friday the 13th is a very lucky day,” SpaceX Launch Control radioed once the astronauts reached orbit. “That was quite a ride,” replied the crew’s commander, Jessica Meir.

The SpaceX Crew-12 will embark on a science mission that is expected to last eight months.

The research includes studies on pneumonia treatment, on-demand intravenous fluid generation, automated plant monitoring, nitrogen-fixing microbe interactions for space food production and blood flow effects during spaceflight.

The crew is schedule to arrive on the ISS at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
