McBAIN – The Northern Michigan Christian boys of coach Matt Pluger used a strong second half to pull away from visiting non-league foe Mesick on Friday, Feb. 6, and claim a 64-48 victory.
The game had beentied at 26 at the half before the Comets outscored visiting Mesick 38-22 in the second half.
Pluger acknowledged that his team was “pretty stagnant” to start things off but got after it in the second quarter to change the complexion of the game.
“We stayed in it after Mesick had us down by 10 early and battled hard to even it up,” he said.
Senior sparkplug Marshall Currell brought his tenacious energy off the bench in the second quarter to help fuel the NMC comeback.
Fluid junior wing Blair DeZeeuw kept making deposits as the game went on and finished with a team-high 18 points. Sophomore Alden Winkle joined Blair in double digits with 13 and strong-armed senior Sam Pluger struck for 10. Eli “Bulls-Eye” Bowden was on target for eight points.
NMC (7-12, 3-10) travel to Houghton Lake this Friday, Feb. 13, and face Evart at home on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
