The Senior Resource Center is hosting a free presentation on the future of space exploration, according to a community announcement.

The talk, titled “Back to the Moon: Artemis II and What It Means for All of Us,” will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 17. Sarah Treadwell, a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador and science communicator, will lead the discussion.

The Artemis II mission will be the first crewed journey around the moon in more than 50 years. It will send three Americans and one Canadian on a 10-day trip.

Mission aims to prepare humans for Mars

The presentation will cover how Artemis II fits into NASA’s broader plan to return humans to the moon and build a sustainable lunar presence.

“Ultimately, the goal is to learn how to live and work on another world as we prepare for human missions to Mars,” the announcement stated.

Treadwell has a background in space science, astrobiology and immersive media. She is also a research science affiliate with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, focusing on science communication and education.

In addition, Treadwell offers groups the opportunity to experience a live, portable planetarium powered by OpenSpace, a NASA-funded visualization platform.

OpenSpace allows audiences to explore real NASA data in real time, making it possible to tailor each program to the specific interests of a community or student group.

The presentation at the Senior Resource Center is free, but seating is limited. To reserve a spot, call 815-235-9777.
