In the early morning of November 5, 2013 (Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time, HAST), the Subaru Telescope observed Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) as it approached the Sun. Thanks to the combination of the Subaru Telescope and the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), which offers an ultra-wide field of view, sharp stellar images, and exceptional light-gathering power, the observations captured even the faintest structures of the comet’s tail. This tail extended over one degree across the sky, approximately twice the apparent diameter of the full Moon, in the direction opposite the Sun.
