Hello first time Posting here.
I love the Orion constellation and every night I see it I'm amazed. But after looking online for the actual drawing over it I've been stumped. I live in the southern hemisphere and what I see vs what it says online doesn't seem to make an awful lot of sense. I was hoping there was someone here that could explain it for me.
I've looked online across various websites and pages but I cant wrap my head around it. I feel like I'm being told not to believe my own eyes.
All I can see is the archer in the first image but everything online says it's the second image with a shield or skin. I've seen discourse from other subreddits about this before but now Google is trash I can only find a few of the ones id seen earlier. Come someone explain how the second makes any sense when the first points at sirus and anatomically makes sense. Thank you.

In your first drawing Orion is upside down in terms of Orion the figure, the segment where you have drawn the torso is actually the other way, with orions legs pointing up towards where you have drawn the head and orions arm holding his shield is down where the left foot is, I would suggest using apps like star walk 2 to get a better understanding if this explanation wasn’t sufficient, sincerely another southern hemisphere dweller
Look at it however you like! The stick figures aren’t officially established. However, the Arabic star name Rigel means ‘foot’ and the ‘bet’ part of Betelgeuse is derived from either ‘hand’ or ‘armpit’. So the Greek and Arabs saw the constellation in the way we see it from the northern hemisphere (upside down from your perspective).
In any case, it would make more sense for Orion to hunt Taurus the bull than his faithful hunting dog Sirius…
orion’s “belt” is pointing at sirius. sirius is not in the direction of the bow/shield.
you have mistaken sirius’ position.
You’re in the southern hemisphere so, Orion would appear “upside down.” That’s pretty much it.
