As far as sci-fi horror goes, few names carry more weight than 20th Century Studios’ legendary Alien franchise. Since changing cinema forever with the release of the original Alien in 1979, the franchise has released several memorable sequels, including one title from 2024 that is finally coming to a brand-new streaming service at the start of 2026.
On January 1, 2026, Prime Video will be adding Fede Alvarez’s 2024 film, Alien: Romulus to its streaming library, finally introducing the film to streaming services after an extended delay. It’s a major win for both Alien fans and Prime Video users, as well as a potential precursor to bigger things for the iconic franchise.

Until recently, Alien: Romulus has been absent from major streaming services, and although it was available to rent & purchase on digital marketplaces, its addition to the Prime Video lineup brings the film to a larger audience than ever before. Considering its 85% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, Prime users would be wise to check out the well-received sequel as soon as they can after it is added on January 1.
Like the rest of the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus follows a group of humans as they attempt to survive an encounter with the dangerous. Bolstered by performances from talented young actors like Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), and Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), the film ushers the terrifying Xenomorph into the modern era better than any Alien sequel in decades.
Alien: Romulus released to a $350 million box office back in 2024, and it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects that same year. Although details are sparse, the film has a sequel purportedly in the works that may explore the aftermath of Romulus’ story (and potentially continue uniting the recently-rebooted Alien and Predator franchises).
While the future of Alien is currently up in the air, the franchise’s most recent addition is still a fresh part of the cultural zeitgeist. Hopefully, Alien: Romulus will become even more popular thanks to its exposure on Prime Video, potentially setting up an even bigger second half to the 2020s for the iconic franchise.
