The Ring Nebula is a glowing cloud of gas, a so called planetary nebula, formed when a star similar to our Sun blows off its outer layers near the end of its life. What we see as a bright ring is actually a shell of gas illuminated by the hot stellar core left behind, from our viewpoint the shell appears ring shaped.
