However, despite all the sci-fi speculations, as per the photographer of the viral photograph– the image had less to do with extraterrestrial and more with being yet another uniquely beautiful natural phenomenon. The photograph was captured by photographer Valter Binotto on November 17 at 10:45 local time. Taking to his social media, he stated that the red glow stretched for ‘nearly 200 km’, and stood ‘100 km above’ the tiny town. As per Binotto, it was a rare atmospheric phenomenon, which he called ELVEs. ‘ELVEs’ is reportedly a huge ring of light that is ‘caused by electromagnetic pulses from powerful thunderstorms’.
