Ripley has been speaking about the abandoned sequel from District 9 director and Walter Hill’s “intriguing” Alien V
Will Sigourney Weaver ever return to the Alien franchise? Much speculation has bubbled away over the years, whether with cameos or full appearances, with the closest we got to her return in director Neill Blomkamp’s aborted sequel to Aliens, which was first mooted in 2015. Now, Weaver has been chatting about the project once more with some new nuggets.
Speaking at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, where she attended a screening of Ridley Scott’s Alien, followed by an hour-long masterclass, Weaver dished some more info about the film, which would have ignored the events of both Alien 3 (directed by David Fincher) and Alien: Resurrection (directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and saw Blomkamp in the director’s chair.
On the project, Weaver said:
Yes. Well, I think like many of us, I was a big admirer of Neill [Blomkamp]. His movie was so striking, and I worked with him on a movie called [Chappie]. And I loved working with Neil, and he had this idea of bringing Ripley and Newt back.
It was a wonderful script, and unfortunately, it was at that point I think that Ridley Scott decided to be very possessive about the series and really drilled down on his prequels.
And so I think it was a disaster for that project. We were never able to… I think Neil, in fact, just gave up, and he’s so talented. I wish him all the best.
Those words on Ridley Scott becoming more involved is seemingly the true story, as despite 20th Century Fox greenlighting Blomkamp’s film, it became a choice between his film and a follow-up to Scott’s Prometheus, and the studio ultimately went with the original director, who brought 2017’s Alien: Covenant to the screen instead.
Indeed, Scott commented that the film was only in the idea/treatment stage before Covenant got made, but Weaver and Aliens helmer James Cameron have said they both read Blomkamp’s script.
Weaver did, however, confirm that Walter Hill has written “about 50 pages” of an Alien V script that, while she spoke about never being interested in going back to see where Ripley is now, said she has found Hill’s work so far “intriguing”.
