During the Cold War, the U.S. Navy secretly tapped Soviet undersea communication cables in a mission called Operation Ivy Bells. For nearly 9 years, divers risked their lives in Soviet waters, collecting intelligence that shaped nuclear disarmament — until the operation was betrayed in the 1980s.

Much of the story remained classified for decades, making it one of the lesser-known episodes of Cold War history.
